A HIPAA-trained patient counselor, Philip E. Michael draws on over two decades of experience as a pharmacist, having worked for Aracoma Drug Company and Rite Aid Corporation in West Virginia. The pharmacist leverages his medical education and patient interaction skills to effectively communicate with clients and physicians in regards to patients’ health. Outside of work, Philip Michael’s favorite pastimes include traveling with his family and participating in outdoor activities and team sports such as basketball.
Among the major sports in the world, basketball is the only sport that originated at a specific location: Springfield College in the United States, then called the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School, in 1891. Subsequently, modifications were made to the initial orientation of the game, such as using a basketball in place of a soccer ball, and marking straight boundary lines for the courts. To ensure uniformity in the game, the YMCA and the Amateur Athletic Union established the Joint Rules Committee in 1915. This was renamed the National Basketball Committee (NBC) of the United States and Canada; until 1979, this committee served as the principal amateur rule-making body of the game.
Depending on the level of play, basketball rules may vary. However, certain important regulations remain unchanged. The team with the highest number of points is considered the winner of the game; to earn points for their team, players can throw the basketball through the opponent team's basket within the three-point line for 2 points, or make a shot outside the lines for 3 points. Also, a free throw is worth one point. The game prohibits any player from touching an offensive player (player with the ball) in a way that results in the offensive player missing their shot or losing the ball. Players are also not allowed to kick or punch the ball, or obstruct the ball while it is on the rim of the basket or traveling downward towards the basket.
